Beatrice Beck Schimmer has served as Vice President Medicine at the University of Zurich since August 2018 and is a member of its Executive Board. She studied human medicine at the University of Bern and completed her habilitation at the University of Zurich in 2003. From 2005 to 2018, she worked as a senior physician at the University Hospital Zurich and was appointed full professor of anesthesiology in 2009, where she was active in both basic and clinical research. Between 2012 and 2018, she was a member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation. She has been strongly engaged in the promotion of early-career researchers, with a particular focus on supporting women in academic career development.
