History of Gender Medicine and a Look Ahead in the Future

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Vera Regitz-Zagrosek (Charité Berlin)

Vera Regitz-Zagrosek is a clinical cardiologist and Senior Professor at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. She founded the Berlin Institute for Gender in Medicine in 2004 as well as the German and International Society for Gender Medicine in 2007.

Her work bridges clinical and basic research, with a focus on integrating sex and gender into cardiovascular medicine. She has coordinated numerous national and international research projects and contributed to clinical guidelines, with more than 300 scientific publications.

Her contributions to gender medicine have been widely recognised, including honorary doctorates from the Universities of Innsbruck and Zurich, the Bundesverdienstkreuz (2018), and the Paracelsus Medal (2025).

Motivation:
As a physician and researcher, I have always aimed to improve medical care for all patients. Early in my career, I recognized that women were often understudied and undertreated, which motivated me to advance gender medicine. My work is driven by a commitment to equity, scientific excellence, and better health outcomes for everyone.
